A service technician is someone who specializes in general maintenance, repair, and sometimes modification. A service technician is knowledgeable in working on all parts of a variety of vehicle makes and may specialize in a specific area or in a specific make of vehicle. In repairing vehicles, their main role is to diagnose the problem accurately and quickly. They often have to quote prices for their customers before beginning work or after partial disassembly for inspection. The service technician uses both electronic and their senses to gather data. Their job may involve the repair of a specific part or the replacement of one or more parts as assemblies.
Because vehicles today possess complex computer and electronic systems, technicians need to have a broader base of knowledge than in the past. A “service technician” may also be referred to as "service tech". Fading quickly is the day of the 'shade tree mechanic', who needed little knowledge of today's computerized systems.
Due to the increasingly complex nature of the technology that is now incorporated into today’s trucks, most dealerships, repair facilities and garages now provide sophisticated diagnostic computers to their technicians, without which they may be unable to diagnose or repair electronic issues in modern vehicles.
