Diesel Mechanic/Maintenance Technician's Job Purpose at Illinois Central:


Maintains, repairs, and overhauls school buses and other company vehicles. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of maintenance tasks. May direct the work of others. Works under general supervision with some latitude for independent judgment. May assist in training less experienced technicians or new employees.


Responsibilities and Duties

Our Diesel Technician/Mechanic's Major Responsibilities:


  • Repairs and maintains school buses and other company vehicles while adhering to FMCSA guidelines
  • Inspects and tests equipment at prescribed intervals of time and usage or upon malfunction or breakdown.
  • Inspects, tests, and aligns bus lights and wheels and maintains electrical systems and controls. Balances wheels to minimize wear on tires and rotates wheels at prescribed mileage intervals. Tunes up engine to maintain combustion control standards. Adjusts equipment to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards.
  • Maintains part usage records and orders repair parts from designated suppliers.

Qualifications and Skills

At IL Central our Minimum Education & Certifications Required for our Diesel Technician/Mechanic are:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess or be able to acquire CDL Operator’s license (Class B) with P endorsement within 60 days of hire.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the transportation industry preferred.
  • 3+ years of related mechanical experience or trade school with endorsements such as Preventative Maintenance or Brake Certifications preferred.
